Upcoming stars shine at Northern Region Redbacks Squash Tournament

INGHAM Squash Club has hosted the Northern Region Redbacks junior qualifying tournament at the squash centre.

Over the two-day event, 36 players from Mackay to Cairns took part in the third qualifying tournament in the Northern Region calendar for 2021.

Club Secretary Kim Di Bella said the tournament was a huge success: ‘The weekend was a hit with spectators and family members watching from the viewing deck.

‘We had 13 players representing the Ingham club and each player performed well with many grabbing a place in their tiered event.’

Playing in their first tournament, talented brothers Brayden and Damien Marino took out runner up in both their divisions.

Upcoming star Kara Nash, also playing in her first tournament, fought hard to grab third place in division 5, while older brother Jack came in runner up in the all-Ingham division 3 podium, alongside winner Sharief Kabay and third placed Carter Bates.

In division 6, Ingham beginner Connor Henderson took out the title, with Leonard Strik coming second.

In the doubles event, Carter Bates teamed up with Townsville junior Hannah O’Toole, taking the top spot from Sharief Kabay and Mackay’s Kayce Hoani-Vincent.

Other representatives on the weekend included Mackenzie and Ally Rhodes, Liam Fascetti, Lachlan Erba and Zane Robinson.

Mrs Di Bella added: ‘It was great to see our players in action, especially our beginners coming through and playing at their first tournament.

‘We are always looking for junior members to come and have a go.

‘Squash is a great game for both the body and the brain.

‘It’s physical but also a great thinking game and once you start to play, we guarantee you’ll enjoy it.’

Mrs Di Bella said the weekend’s success was attributed to their sponsors.

‘Ingham Squash Club would like to thank silver sponsors, Robyn’s Mobile Computer Services and Mick’s Hot Bread Kitchen as well as their Bronze sponsors, Local Member for Parliament, Nick Dametto, Ingham Motorcycles and Mowers and Ingham Family Medical Centre.’

Ingham squash juniors will continue training for the next qualifier in Mackay in May where the Northern Region team will be named.

If you would like to give squash a go, junior training is held every Tuesday afternoon after school, with fixtures on Fridays.

A grade men fixtures are held on Tuesday nights and A and B grade mixed fixtures on Thursday nights.
