INGHAM Squash Club hosted the region’s top squash players for the Northern Region Redbacks Junior Championships last month.

A total of 36 talented players from Mackay to Cairns took part in the first qualifying tournament in the Northern Region calendar for season 2022.

Players lunged and ran for a top position in six divisions while spectators watched from the viewing deck.

The 14-player local side performed well over the weekend with many winning a place in their tiered event.

Upcoming star, Kara Nash fought hard to grab second place in division six. In the same division, newcomer Caleb Hill came a credible sixth.

Leonard Strik, playing in only his second tournament, finished fourth in division five.

Myles Tessieri came away with the runners up trophy in division four, with fellow Ingham junior Oliver Flynn coming in sixth place.

Four Ingham players dominated the top four rankings in division three. On the winner’s podium was Deegan Mancinelli, with Sharief Kababy runner up, Carter Bates third and Zane Robinson fourth.

Girl power ruled division two with top Ingham female player, Ally Rhodes going through undefeated while Kate Butcher fought hard to win second place. In the same division, the ever-improving Jack Nash finished a gallant fourth.

In the top division, number one seed Lachlan Erba played flawless squash to beat his Mackay rival. Playing in the same division, young Liam Fascetti beat the number three seed to finish in seventh.

Playing in the double’s competition, Ally Rhodes and Carter Bates teamed up to claim the doubles title to finish off a successful weekend for the Ingham club.

Ingham Squash Club would like to thank their major sponsor Hinchinbrook Shire Council whose contribution allowed the tournament to go ahead successfully.

Players are now in training for the next Northern Region Redbacks tournament to be held in Mackay in February.

Junior squash training is from 3:30 pm every Tuesday.
