Success for Forrest Beach athletes at home

AT their home carnival, the Forrest Beach surf club performed well with some outstanding performances by their competitors both in the water and on the beach.

North Barrier Branch Surf Club’s Sarina, Eimeo, Mackay, Ayr, Townsville’s Picnic Bay and Arcadian made the trip north for the two-day event, which included a full program of surf sports events from the under-8 nippers right through to masters.

The Forrest Beach team made up of 36 athletes finished fourth overall, behind their bigger rivals Arcadian, Picnic Bay and Sarina.

The club’s nipper contingent excelled on the beach, winning the under-12s relay with a team of Ellie Lahtinen, Alice Austin, Ruby MacPherson and Ace Rooker.

There were stand-out performances from Mariam Hall, who won the under-14 female beach flags and sprint and under-10 competitor Billie Lahtinen, who claimed first place in both the female beach flags and sprint, was second in the female wade race and third in the board race.

Masters competitor Quinta Lahtinen represented the 30-39 age group and came away with a gold in the female beach flags and sprints while club president Tony Lahtinen took out the tube race for the masters event for those aged between 30 and 39 and placed second in the beach sprint.

Under-17s competitor Troy Austin had a great weekend, tallying 49 points towards the club’s overall points from individual and team events, taking out second place in the beach flags and sprint and backing up for four board paddles in a row in the under-17s male board race and board relay, open male board race and open board relay – where his team placed second with teammates Caleb Lahtinen and Joshua Marmara.

Another outstanding performance and highlight of the carnival was by under-12s competitor Nalini Schofield, who gained third place in the ironwoman event at her first ever surf carnival.

Nalini joined Forrest Beach this season and is new to surf lifesaving but tackled the ultimate event of the carnival with so much courage, guts and determination, like she had been doing it for years – a real surprise package and someone to look out for in the future.

Alongside the action on the beach, the club and the Hinchinbrook Shire Council partnered together to bring the community a family fun day which proved to be a hit with the nippers and wider community with rides, games, activities as well as live entertainment, raising awareness of the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing and in support of Queensland Mental Health Week.

Club President Tony Lahtinen said this year’s carnival was a huge success with the addition of the fun day.

He said: ‘We thank the Council for coming on board to support our event, especially to raise awareness for positive mental health and wellbeing.

‘Surf Life Saving is a great volunteer, community and sporting organisation which values and promotes good health and wellbeing, particularly positive mental health for its members.

‘Being part of a team, volunteering and contributing to the community are the main reasons why many of our members are involved and of course for the social aspect and comradery.

Mr Lahtinen said that the feedback from this year’s carnival was positive and hoped to be doing a similar event with Council for future carnivals.

‘Our carnival and events like these are not made possible without the strong support from our community, the support and commitment of our sponsors and of course our dedicated group of volunteers and lifesavers who always come together to put on a great event.

‘We are proud of our competitors and their great achievements over the weekend, especially our nippers who have given it their all.’

The club now look forward to the North Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in Mackay at the end of the month.
