Keeping People Connected

Three killed in two crashes, Townsville

Three people have died, and several others are injured following two separate crashes at Mutarnee overnight.

Around 6.30pm, initial investigations suggest a truck and a Mitsubishi Lancer travelling in opposite directions collided on the Bruce Highway, near Barrett Road.

Following the collision, the Lancer veered off the highway near Ollera Creek Bridge.

The driver of the truck, a 60-year-old Beenleigh man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

The sole occupant of the Lancer, a 27-year-old Bambaroo man, died at the scene.

Around 2km north in a separate crash around midnight, early investigations suggest a Toyota Landcruiser crashed into the rear of a stationary Mazda 3 as it travelled south.

The Mazda 3 has crashed into a Mitsubishi Lancer, which in turn hit another four-wheel-drive.

A 26-year-old Bushland Beach woman, who was the sole occupant in the Mazda 3, died at the scene.

Members of the public and emergency services rendered first aid to a 23-year-old Atherton man, however he also died on scene a short time later. He was the sole occupant of the Lancer.

Three other people travelling in the four-wheel-drive were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Landcruiser, a 31-year-old Mundingburra man, was taken into police custody. He was also transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The Bruce Highway is expected to be closed in both directions until mid-morning.

Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations of both crashes.

With almost 130 lives lost on our roads this year, police are reminding motorists every decision they make behind the wheel counts.
