Chopper flies man to hospital as Hinchinbrook boat smash leaves nine injured

A BOAT smash in Hinchinbrook left nine people injured – with one man being airlifted to hospital in Townsville.

One passenger was flung into the sea after two boats collided just before 1 am on Saturday.

The man had to be fished out of the water but had suffered serious facial injuries.

A 39-year-old man is still being treated at hospital in Townsville but is said to be in a stable condition.

The skipper of a third boat that was quickly on the scene to assist has been praised by Senior Police Sergeant Gio Tantolo.

A yellow and white 5.8-metre Haines Hunter half cabin and a white 8.2-metre Grady White centre are believed to be the boats involved in the smash and police are appealing for witnesses to assist with their investigation.

Four men in their twenties, a man in his thirties and a teenager were also injured in the collision.

Two people had to be taken to Townsville for treatment while five were transferred to Ingham Hospital.

Six of the seven who received hospital treatment have been discharged.
