Nail sentence over

Mother-of-three Ti Chi Pham - known as Jenny - and her husband Duc Que Nguyen are the new managers of Helen's Nails, Waxing and Massage on Herbert Street.

THE Covid-lockdown was a nail-biting time.

Pubs were closed, footy was cancelled – and beauty queens could not get their nails done.

Those used to regular trips to the salon for manicures and pedicures were left to self-manage broken nails and watch on in horror as rough skin grew over once dainty feet.

So when Helen’s Nails, Waxing and Massage reopened after two-and-a-half months – there were more than a few happy customers bursting through the Herbert Street doors.

‘I was so happy – I booked an appointment straight away,’ says Ingham Disability support worker Karima Odo, who is having her nails done.

‘I had a lot of dead skin on my feet [after lockdown] and it didn’t look good – I booked an appointment straight away,’ Ingham Disability support worker Karima Odo.

‘It was more the pedicure I missed than the nails – I’d normally be here every three weeks.

‘I didn’t realise how much dead skin was there until she took it off.’

Karima moved to Ingham from Innisfail last December and quickly discovered Helen’s Nails.

‘I love coming here,’ she says. ‘Jenny is really friendly and she does great nails.’

The 27-year-old arrived in Hinchinbrook at the same time as a Jenny Pham, who is the new manager of the salon.

Jenny, whose real name is Thi Chi, is running the beauty parlour for her aunty Helen, who founded the business but has moved to Sydney.

‘Jenny is my English name,’ she says beaming through a face-mask. ‘Like a nickname.’

She is working on Karima’s nails.

‘I love Ingham. The people are so friendly. I struggle with English sometimes – but they help me.’

Ti Chi was a popular women after reopening.

‘We had ladies coming in with broken nails,’ she says. ‘They were happy to get them done.’

The 30-year-old and her husband are originally from Vietnam.

Ti Chi studied business and accounting before moving to Sydney to study English, after which she trained as a beauty therapist.

Th mother-of-three is helped at the salon by her husband Duc Que Nguyen (37).

Their four-year-old twin daughters are at Ingham Community and Kindergarten Preschool and they also have an 18-month-old son.

‘We love our new home,’ she says.

So there it is – the Covid-nail sentence is over.

Helen’s Nails, Waxing and Massage is located at 18 Herbert Street and is open from Monday through to Saturday.
