Keeping People Connected

More wheels needed to deliver meals to our elderly

MORE people are relying on the ‘Meals on Wheels’ service that provides affordable dinners to our elderly.

Since the global health pandemic hit, there has been an increase in demand for deliveries in Ingham.

Pensioners are the most at risk from Covid-19 and many have been social distancing and self-isolating.

With restrictions easing in Queensland over the last few weeks, grandkids have again been able to hug their nonnos.

But demand for ‘Meals on Wheels’ is high – and more workers are needed to keep up the supply.

Former music teacher Rita Phillips has been involved for 17 years and is now the president of the local branch.

She said: ‘If people who are out of work want to volunteer – that would be wonderful.

‘This gives our elderly a chance to stay at home – they can’t all go into nursing homes.

‘We’ve got women who’ve been volunteering for 30 and 40 years and are now in their 80s.

‘We need some younger people. It doesn’t have to be three times a week. It can be once or twice a month from 7 am to 11.30 am – and you’ll get trained up.

‘Our elderly have made our community what it is and now we need to give back’.

The musician, who turned 70 this week, ran Rita Phillips Music Studio for 40 years until she stepped down in 2014.

Rita celebrated her milestone birthday with family and friends at the Hinchinbrook Hotel.

She moved to Ingham with her husband Keith, who is a former mayor of the Shire, and the pair now run Keita Services, an engineering business.

‘We moved here in 1969 for 18 months [and have stayed for 51 years],’ she said. ‘It’s the people that make it such a great place to live’.

Ingham Meals on Wheels ferried 12 thousand dishes around Hinchinbrook last year and delivers close to 180 meals a week.

There are close to 50 volunteers and only the head chef and administration staff receive a salary.
